The Importance of Keeping Pace with Technological Developments in Project Management and Their Impact on Enhancing the Competitive and Operational Efficiency of Saudi Ports

This study examined the importance of keeping pace with technological developments in project management and their impact on the competitive and operational efficiency of ports in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It adopted a descriptive-analytical mixed-method approach that combined a questionnaire with qualitative interviews involving specialists in port projects, technology, and operations. The study focused on modern applications, including artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, automation, robotics, drones, geographic information systems, interactive dashboards, and advanced data analytics. The findings indicated a high level of technological adoption in Saudi port projects. Most participants reported that modern technologies improved schedule accuracy, cost estimation, implementation speed, transparency, real-time monitoring, risk forecasting, and operational safety. The results also showed a strong positive association between the adoption of advanced technologies and improved project performance indicators. However, the study identified several challenges, particularly high initial investment costs, shortages in specialized competencies, resistance to organizational change, difficulties integrating legacy and modern systems, and cybersecurity risks. The study concluded that broader technological integration, continuous workforce development, stronger cybersecurity measures, and systematic use of international experiences are essential for strengthening the operational efficiency and competitive position of Saudi ports in line with Saudi Vision 2030.
